Chapter 10

The next day I got up earlier than usual, so excited by the prospect of a good research session. I told Rutherford about last night. “I feel like that makes for a very successful snooping session.” I opened a can of cat food for him. He just stared at me with those big, green eyes, clearly not caring about anything but his food.

I arrived at work just in time to take a call from Ro.

“Madeleine’s all in a tizzy again today,” she said. “Please don’t tell anyone about the ghost, even Lucy and Madeleine. I want to see if there’s some other phenomenon that can explain what we saw.”

“Seriously, Ro? What can honestly explain a see-through woman appearing in front of us and then disappearing and then walking through walls?”

“Hence the research.”

“Well, let me know what you find. Or maybe we’re both just crazy,” I joked.

“Don’t even say that. It’s entirely too possible.”

“I’ll bring lunch over and we can chat about the research we’ve done. Sound good?” I really wanted a reason to not eat that chicken and broccoli I’d brought again today.

“Only if it’s something healthy. I almost died from that cream puff yesterday.”

“I swear you have no taste buds.”

“See you at noon.”

“Bye.” We hung up.

I dove into research, going online and trying to discover more about the family and the paranormal, pulling books about our town history and ultimately finding an article preserved in a history book that related to the paranormal. The title, A Ghost Showed Me, snagged me right away. The woman was nicknamed “Martha, the Mad” in the article, an encouraging start.

I perused down to see her statements. It turned out that she had started seeing ghosts around city hall and had found a person murdered. She had initially been arrested and put in jail. Her defense had said she was not mentally competent as she insisted that the ghosts led her to the murder victim and he had already been dead. I shivered. If the body hadn’t been so old, the police might have suspected us when we found him in the garden.

It turned out that Martha was released when someone confessed five years after she’d been arrested and put in jail. I checked the article’s date. She had been in her forties, almost fifty, it sounded like, and the article was from fifty-five years ago. It was likely she was no longer around for me to ask questions to now. To confirm, I checked the obituaries and found that she had indeed passed away at a ripe old age of eighty-eight. But something else caught my eye. She had a daughter. It sounded like the daughter had moved away, but I wondered if Gavin could track her down, too.

I dialed him.

“Darling cousin,” he answered.

“How are you, troublemaker?”

“Well, I was just told by my sister that I’m the spawn of Satan, and I can’t believe she would insult our mother like that. And in front of her, too! But beyond that, I’m doing excellent.
